Tech brand’s first SUV climbs from third place in December to kick off the New Year ahead of last year’s sales champion.

The Xiaomi YU7 was the best-selling new energy vehicle (NEV) in China in January 2026, climbing from third place in December to secure 37,869 unit sales and become the month’s best-selling vehicle across all categories, according to Autohome’s compiled sales rankings.

Xiaomi’s total deliveries exceeded 39,000 vehicles in January, representing a 95% increase year-on-year, with the YU7 contributing over 90% of the brand’s total deliveries, establishing itself as Xiaomi’s primary volume driver ahead of the all-new SU7’s scheduled April launch, which may alter the brand’s sales composition.

Last year’s best-selling car in China with 465,775 sales , the Geely Xingyuan, secured second position in January with 29,007 units, advancing two positions from December’s fourth place ranking.

The second-generation AITO M7, which now boasts EV and EREV drivetrains, claimed third place with 26,454 units delivered in January, taking the model past the 400,000 total unit mark which has seen it claim more than 40% of AITO’s total brand deliveries since launch.

Premium segment performance

NIO’s ES8, which has single-handedly kickstarted a resurgence in the brand’s fortunes, ranked fourth with 17,645 units, distinguishing itself as the sole model among the top eight priced above RMB 400,000 (£41,300 / $57,860).

NIO delivered 27,182 vehicles overall in January, up 96% year-on-year, with the new-generation ES8 accounting for approximately 84.45% of the NIO brand’s deliveries, and around 65% of the entire group’s deliveries, a potentially concerning level of reliance on a single product.

Meanwhile, Li Auto’s fully electric i6, the brand’s most affordable electric model that has faced capacity issues in its early months, climbed into the top six with 16,883 sales in January, surpassing the Tesla Model Y’s 16,845 units.

That figure also represents a large proportion of the brand’s deliveries, making up 60% of the 27,668 units Li Autos that found homes in January, with battery supply improvements helping to recover early lost ground for the model.

Other winners

Fangchengbao’s Tai 7, whose 17,116 deliveries accounted for almost 80% of the brand’s total in January, continued its excellent run to take fifth place on the table.

The recently launched MG4, an all-new front-wheel drive model which in China replaces the little-loved previous model and in the UK be sold alongside the 2026 version of the rear- and all-wheel drive version, took 8th place on the list, showing significantly improved fortunes in its home market.
