New 1.5 Megawatt charging stations will support new tech offering petrol station-like experience.

BYD has unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery capable of charging from 10 percent to 97 percent in just nine minutes, alongside plans to deploy 20,000 flash-charging stations across China by year-end.

The Chinese electric vehicle giant officially launched what it calls the world’s most powerful mass-produced supercharger on Thursday, boasting a single-gun power output of up to 1500kW, representing a 50 percent increase from the first-generation flash-charger released in March 2025.

BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu announced the “Flash-charging China” strategy, revealing the company has already completed 4,239 stations as of March 5 and plans to build an additional 15,761 stations before December.

The new battery technology achieves what BYD terms “flash charging,” taking only five minutes to charge from 10 percent to 70 percent. Wang explained that stopping the charge at 97 percent is a deliberate energy-saving measure, with the remaining 3 percent capacity reserved for regenerative braking to reduce overall energy consumption.

Extreme weather performance breakthrough

The second-generation Blade Battery addresses long-standing concerns about cold weather performance. After being frozen at minus 30 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, the battery takes only 12 minutes to charge from 20 percent to 97 percent, just three minutes longer than at room temperature.

BYD claims this advancement makes “the persistent challenges of using EVs in China’s freezing north a thing of the past.”

The flash charging technology also boasts compatibility with roughly 4.8 million existing public charging piles, achieving speeds 30 to 50 percent faster than other models.

Ten BYD models will be the first to feature the new battery, including the Fangchengbao Tai 3 and Tai 7, the BYD Song Ultra, Sealion 06, Seal 07, and DaTang, the Denza Z9GT and N9, and the Yangwang U8L and U7, the latter of which gets a 150kWh battery pack capable of a pure electric range of 1,006 kilometres. The fully electric Denza Z9GT boasts a range of up to 1,036 kilometres, both on the CLTC cycle.

Ambitious charging network expansion

The 20,000 planned stations will be divided into two categories. BYD will build 18,000 in partnership with Chinese charging network operators, requiring no additional grid capacity or land to enable fast and convenient construction.

The company aims to have a flash-charging station within five kilometres in 90 percent of urban areas.

The remaining 2,000 will be highway flash-charging stations, with BYD planning to deploy one station every 100-plus kilometres on average along highways, with the first batch of 1,000 highway chargers ready before this year’s May Day holiday.

Each flash-charging stall is equipped with two charging guns and a super-fast discharging energy storage system, maintaining flash-charging speeds even when two vehicles charge simultaneously.

Each charging gun can serve 50 cars per day, delivering 2,000kWh of electricity daily assuming 40kWh per vehicle.

Open network and customer incentives

BYD announced its flash-charging stations will be open to the public, allowing electric vehicles from other brands to use the network, though their charging power may be significantly lower than BYD models.

Starting immediately, all vehicles equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery will receive one year of free supercharging from the date of delivery. After the free period ends, charging fees will align with industry peers.

The company has also introduced a wish list initiative where four nearby flash-charging vehicle owners can submit a request for a new station. If conditions permit, installation can be completed within a week following a site visit.

BYD plans to expand its supercharging stations to overseas markets by the end of 2026, realising its “Flash-charging Planet” vision. The timing of these announcements comes as BYD attempts to regain momentum following a six-month sales slump and sharp decline in February deliveries.

The second-generation Blade Battery maintains BYD’s focus on safety, passing simultaneous charging and nail penetration tests after 500 flash-charging cycles without emitting smoke or flames. The battery also withstood bottom impact tests with 10 times the force required by China’s new national standards.
