BYD has revealed the cabin design of its upcoming Song Ultra electric vehicle (EV), showcasing a versatile interior that transforms into a sleeping area for camping and leisure activities.

The Chinese automaker disclosed the mid-size SUV’s interior details highlighting what it calls “big bed mode” as a key selling point for the electric model.

The Song Ultra EV looks likely to start at around RMB 170,000 (£18,400 / $24,800), making it a particularly affordable option in the segment, and potentially opening up the likelihood of international sales alongside the Sealion 5 DM-i.

The interior shares much of its design with the Song Pro DM-i, upon which the Ultra EV is based, but features a few minor design changes to differentiate it from the Pro hybrid.

Convertible sleeping configuration

The standout “big bed mode” takes advantage of the vehicle’s 2,840mm wheelbase, allowing front and rear seats to connect and form a continuous sleeping surface, a configuration that targets users seeking multi-purpose vehicles for travel and outdoor activities.

The dashboard features a fixed, landscape-format central screen, a single wireless charger, cupholders, BYD’s now customary cooling/heating unit in the centre console, and a new steering wheel that appears considerably simpler than traditional BYD wheels.

Other cosmetic changes include different styling around the door grab handles, and slightly different vents on the dash and beneath the centre screen.

In the rear cabin, the Song Ultra EV benefits from plenty of legroom, a central armrest, and silver polygonal trim, and potentially will also receive heated and ventilated rear seats judging by the pricked nature of the faux-leather upholstery.

Technical specifications

The Song Ultra EV adopts BYD’s dynasty family styling approach, featuring a closed front grille combined with a full-width light strip across the “Dragon’s Beard”, while at the rear wraparound taillights and a prominent spoiler feature, creating what BYD describes as a layered and dynamic appearance.

Optional equipment includes a LiDAR sensor system that enables BYD’s God’s Eye B assisted driving technology, providing autonomous driving support for both urban streets and motorway conditions.

The Song Ultra EV measures 4,850mm long, 1,910mm wide, and 1,670mm tall, positioning it squarely in the competitive mid-size SUV segment and, curiously, making it longer than the Sealion 7 EV.

Power comes from a single electric motor producing 270kW, enabling a maximum speed of 210kph, while two battery configurations are offered, a smaller 75.616kWh pack delivering 620km of range on the CLTC cycle, while the larger 82.732kWh option extends this to 710km.

The Song Ultra EV represents BYD’s continued expansion of its electric SUV portfolio, targeting buyers seeking practical family vehicles with recreational capabilities.
